Cathay Pacific inspects Airbus A350 fleet after inflight engine component failure

After one of its Airbus A350s experienced an inflight engine component failure, Cathay Pacific is conducting a fleet-wide inspection on its fleet of the widebody aircraft.  


The Hong Kong-based carrier announced it is conducting a fleet-wide inspection of its 48 A350 aircraft on September 2. The precautionary measure is expected to be completed the same day.


As a result, Cathay Pacific stated a number of its aircraft will be out of service for several days, affecting its operating schedules. Among its A350s, it has identified a number of the same engine components on the affected flight that need to be replaced, and spare parts have been secured, and repair work is underway. The airline cancelled 24 return flights until the end of the following day (September 3), and has updated and provided alternative travel arrangements for affected customers.


“At Cathay, safety of our customers and our people guides every decision we make.  Each aircraft is undergoing a rigorous inspection,” said Keith Brown, Cathay Director Engineering. “Upon completion, the aircraft cleared for operation will return to service, while those identified with technical issues will undergo further repair and maintenance work. Meanwhile, we are liaising with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department and the aircraft and engine manufacturers. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding.”


On September 2, Cathay Pacific flight CX383 bound for Zurich – operated with an A350-1000 – returned to Hong Kong after take-off after an inflight failure of an engine component. According to the airline, the component was the first of its type to suffer the  failure on any A350 worldwide.
